redeemed few more trip using BMI miles

trip 1 PEK-HKG(Stopover)-MUC-PRG on CA and LH business class, total 18750 miles+410 taxes and fees.
trip 2 PRG-FRA-JFK(stopover)-PHX-LAS on LH and US business class, total 18750+ 440 USD taxes and fees.

I know taxes and fees are expensive, but only 37500 miles +850USD in business class for a trip like this, I think it's good deal!

BMI award redemption level increase effective May 1st,2009

Via View from the Wings, Effective May 1st, 2009, BMI FIRST CLASS award redemption will increase by 25% and First Class award flights with Lufthansa will also incur a surcharge of 10,000 destinations miles for each one-way award flight.

First Class award flights

Miles only Miles plus Cash
Current x 2

Miles x2 Cash x2

From 1 May 2009 x 2.5

Miles x2.5 Cash x2.5

Not too bad at all consider BMI still offers the best rate on redemption and one way award for half RT. As for LH first class, BMI is not allow member to redeem LH first class award using C+P option, if the new surcharge of 10000 is for also good for C+P, that's acutally an improvement.

Still, no airline program can beat BMI diamond club

Lufthansa buys BMI!!!!

According to the news,

LH will buy BMI, so I am guessing BMI Diamond Club will be ended soon and become LH Miles and More program. It may not happen right the way, but it should happen eventually because lots of Europe *A carriers already use M&M program

We might have to start redeeming those Miles.

BMI matched my status to Gold

This is actually my second status match request for BMI because I used UA for the first time and got reject due to *A partnership. I sent fax again with a copy of my AA membership card, last month online statement and a letter explaining the reason for match. 6 days later, my status changed to Gold(valid one year from today).

Fax number for status match +44-1623-724099

or via email diamond.club@flybmi.com

With BMI Gold, you can use lounge in North America even if you are flying UA doemstic, but the downsides are

1 You don't have free internet in UA loungue beacuse free internet only gives to RCC paid member. With BMI GOLD, you are considered as GUEST, therefore, no free internet access.

2 You can only bring one guest.

3 You can only use loungue when you fly UA, US or AC in North America, but if you are paid member of RCC, you can use any time. This is very helpful at aiports like LGA, SFO, where UA and AA in same terminal and not too far from each other.

I think if you are also 1K with UA living around airport like SFO, LGA, you should get RCC membership instead of using BMI GOLD. A full year paid RCC membership with spouse for 1K is only $350.

Things you should know when credit *A flight to BMI program

Here are few things you should know to ensure miles credit to BMI properly.

If you are elite with UA, even just a Premier Associate, you should use your Mileage Plus number to make your reservations because you can select Economy Plus seat. After your are done with ur seat selections, call United Airline to change your number to British diamond club number. After they changed the number, check your online receipt again to see how many FFP number is on the reservation because some UA agent will add your BD number, but forget to delete your UA number. If this is the case, your miles may or may not credit to BMI account even your BD number showed on ur boarding pass later

If you have luggage to check or have pending upgrade with UA, then you need to check in with your UA number first, then ask Gate/RCC agent to change to BD number after u drop ur bag/upgrade cleared. If you use Confirmed Regional Upgrade or System wide upgrade and is cleared, you can switch to BD number anytime.

Don't use Easy Checkin Machine to change your Number unless your flight has no connections because Easy checkin will simply ADD BD number to the record without deleting UA number, some flight segments will still credit to UA even BD number is showing on the Boarding pass.

If the miles ever post to your UA account even with BD number on the boarding pass and you want to recredit to BMI account, you need to call UA to remove mileage credit first, then follow the standard missing miles credit request procedures on BMI website. If your boarding pass shows UA account number, then you can not recredit back to BD, at least not without a significant effort.

For all other *Alliance Flight, you can give your BD number at the time of reservation because there is no Economy plus or luggage issue(except US). If for some reason, you need to add number at check in, make sure to tell Check in Agent enter BD xxxxxxx, lots of agent don't even know BMI is *A partner and airline code for BMI.

Another good thing about BMI program

UA and US, both star alliance carriers, have stopped giving minimum 500 mileage for flight shorter than 500, so the flight btw LAX-SBA will only earn u 89 miles.

However, you can credit all those short flight to BMI program, which gives 600 minimum mileage for flight shorter than 600.

You need to call UA reservation to add ur BMI number.

British Midland Airways Diamond Club-Earning Part II

Last time, I talked about some basic earning opportunities for BMI program. There are more ways to earn miles.

1 Hilton stays: many people may already know Hilton HHonors program has double dipping benefit, which you can get Hilton points and Airlines miles at the same time. Most people will use flexible points + fixed miles option, which you will get 10 Hilton points per dollar and 500 miles (100 miles for Hampton Inn) per stay (a stay is defined as consecutive nights at same hotels regardless check in and check out). However, BMI airways is also one of Hilton partners, but the earning ratio is different. You will get 1000 miles per NIGHT up to 3 consecutive nights (3000 miles), this also applies at Hampton Inn hotels, so BMI is the best partner to earn miles for Hilton Double dipping

2 Hertz rental car: Many airlines have different bonus promotion for rental car. BMI will give u 1500 miles regardless number of rental days. However, you will only earn 475 miles if you use any CDP discount code other than AAA. This is not very good if you do a longer rental, but very good deal for some one day rentals at Hertz Local Edition.

I will talk about redemption deals on this program next time.

British Midland Airways Diamond Club-Earning Part I

BMI is British Midland Airways, second largest carrier in UK, part of star alliance network. If you can understand how this program works, this can be one of the best programs in the world.

If you are PAID First or Business class flyer, or if you are economy class flyer, but not fly very often, or you are frequent flyer, but not fly UA and US very often, this maybe the program for you.

You can earn status miles on all star alliance partners and earn destination miles (redeemable miles) on star alliance partner and Qatar Airways and Virgin Atlantic

If you join now, you can get blue plus membership instantly, which will give u a complimentary meal and drink in-flight on Heathrow routes that operate a paid-for in-flight service, however, unless u live in UK, otherwise this benefit is not much for you.

BTW, u need fly 3000 miles on any Star alliance earning eligible flight to get Blue plus Status if you did not sign up via this promotion

Second tier is Sliver, which needs to fly 13000 miles in addition to 3000 miles on any Star alliance earning eligible flight. Primary benefits are use BMI lounge when you fly with BMI and 25% miles bonus and 20kg additional baggage allowance.

Final tier is Gold, which needs to fly 38000 miles in addition to 16K miles above on any Star alliance earning eligible flight. . Primary benefits are 35% bonus miles on BMI and 25% on other partners, use any star alliance partner lounge anywhere, upgrades on BMI award flights to the business cabin (or premium economy cabin on our long haul services) for you and a companion. For the first year, you need total 54K(3+13+38) status miles to get Gold, after that, only 38K to keep you Gold.

We all know that you don’t have any lounge access if you fly domestic within North America unless u purchase membership. However, with BMI Gold Status, you are free to use UA or US lounge even if you travel US domestically(must be on UA or US flight). There are many more benefits, those can be found here

Once you have Gold, then you fly another 17K status miles, after that, all your status miles will be convert to Destination miles on 1:1 basis. This can give you up to 625% bonus miles for a paid First class ticket for certain carriers or 425%/325% on paid business class ticket on certain Carriers or 225%/125% on certain Economy class.

Eg. ORD-MAN-ORD=7652 miles, in paid F, you get 7652*3=22962 destination miles+7652*3=22962 status miles (which will convert to Destination miles)+1913 Gold bonus. Paid First classes earn u 47837 for this RT.

Here is the earning table for different carrier, note: United discounted business class only earn 1.5 bonuses, which means 325% in exceed 55K threshold.
